Hi, I’m Johann.
I am the latest (and youngest) addition to the Partnership team. I started my career as a Trainee at MGI Bass Gordon and climbed the ranks to become a Partner in 2019. I have been very fortunate to learn from excellent mentors in business who I now get to call my fellow Partners. Although I missed some of the historic milestones in the firm’s history – past mergers and amalgamations – I have been around long enough to know that this is where I belong and want to be.
As the current head of Audit and Assurance, I am committed to ensuring compliance with all professional requirements of our staff and our services.
My various roles at the firm have really been instrumental to understanding my clients and their long-term goals, allowing me to grow alongside them. I’m passionate about Auditing – a very short stint in Commerce after my articles can testify to that.
My client portfolio includes a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, distribution, retail, investment holding, property investment, financial services and non-profit organisations. I prefer to take a hands-on approach to the services my team and I provide and always strive to add value to my clients whether it be through tax advice, improvement in business processes or simply the most cost-effective measure.
ON A PERSONAL NOTE:
I am married to my best friend and the proud father of a young son. In my spare time I enjoy watching sport, road cycling and also mountain biking through the Durbanville trails on a sunny day.

Hi, I’m Alan.
I spent more than 11-years at a Big 4 Audit firm before making the (great) decision to join MGI Bass Gordon in 2013. I was subsequently promoted to Partner in 2016.
Whether dealing with large, listed corporates or engaging with the start-up entrepreneur, my approach has always been “relationship first”. As these relationships develop, the understanding of the business, its people and culture deepens, and we can then look to add real value for the long-term and not just deliver a set of financial statements, financial reports or tax returns.
Joining the family at MGI Bass Gordon was an easy decision as it perfectly fuels my passion for family-owned business and has allowed me to bring more personal service than the larger corporate experience. I am extremely passionate about seeing businesses and business owners maximise their true potential by exploring value-add initiatives and opportunities or being the sounding board for ideas.
ON A PERSONAL NOTE:
I am married to an incredible wife and together we do our best to raise three young children and instil in them the values that we hold dear – honesty, integrity, doing the right thing and doing your best to have fun doing it! My “refresh” moments come from exploring the great outdoors where I am an avid runner with permanent numbers in the Comrades Marathon and Two Oceans Ultra as well as a top 10 finish in the Puffer trail run. I also love the ocean and my greatest joy has been introducing my family to surfing, paddling and scuba-diving. It is amazing how much creativity can flow from a good salt-water rinse or mountain-top run!
Q & A WITH Alan

Area(s) of expertise: Audit is my bread-and-butter, but I can’t help but look at tax efficiency!
Coffee order: Short, sharp and black… hold the sugar and the stronger the better! (Three young kids remember!)
WHY?
I am surrounded by entrepreneurs in my extended family and being slightly introverted, my natural inclination has always been to be quick to listen and slow to speak. I soon found that I loved listening to ideas and challenges faced by business owners and leveraging my technical knowledge to see how I could guide them practically into positive and efficient outcomes.
I also find the opportunity to build into the careers of the audit trainees particularly fulfilling and this keeps me (feeling) young and (mostly) up to date!

Hi, I’m Susan.
I joined the MGI Bass Gordon team in 2003 at a tender age of my professional career, after following my heart and relocating “down” from Pretoria. I was promoted to Partner in 2010, just in time to see the firm’s merger to become an even bigger, better and more knowledgeable team of professionals. Although I am currently the only female in our Partnership (some say “Girlboss”), I hope to inspire many young women in business to follow suit and join me at the table.
I am extremely passionate about what I do! I have worked with clients in a wide range of industries including manufacturing, hotels and farming. Working closely with my clients and assisting them in finding solutions for their business needs is important to me. I am also passionate about being involved in the development and growth of our trainees and helping them on their journey to becoming a future CA(SA).
A big interest of mine has always been in technology. As a result, I have been able to support the firm in our changes in technology. This has allowed us to seamlessly adapt to a changed working world and being able to collaborate with our clients in a digital world.
ON A PERSONAL NOTE:
My home is my castle! The flexibility of working from home has been so rewarding – I now get to spend even more time with those that are important to me and managing to walk my 3 Scottish Terriers before starting my working day. I’m a very keen gardener and take extreme pride in my growing vegetable patch. I am also actively involved in the Catholic Women’s League, Cape Town and church activities. Time spent with family and friends is very important to me.

I joined the team in the beginning of 2022, however, I was no stranger to MGI Bass Gordon – I worked for them previously back in 2012 before deciding to go travel and work abroad. I landed up in Dubai without much of a plan – “Let’s see what happens” was my plan. I ended up staying for 6.5 years – during this time I was able to progress in my career and go on many awesome adventures.
While I have a BComm Management Accounting degree from the University of Stellenbosch I always knew my career was not going to be numbers-focused. In fact, the majority of my career has actually been spent working in Human Resources. What I love about my role at MGI Bass Gordon is that I still do the fun part of HR (Recruitment), I get to explore my creativite side (Communications) and no day is ever the same.
